OVERVIEW

Council reclassified three conservation reserves from operational to community land in November 2023.

The reserves that were reclassified are located in:

  • Cattai Wetlands
  • Tuncurry
  • Smiths Lake

The reserves were previously classified as "operational", which meant they have no special restrictions other than those that may apply to any piece of land. In reclassifying these areas to "community", the land cannot be sold; leased, licenced or any other estate granted over the land for more than 21 years; and must have a plan of management prepared for it.

Consultation

The proposal to reclassify the land was placed on public exhibition from 5 September to 12 October 2023.

During that time 23 submissions were received from the community, a summary which can be found in the report to Council on 22 November 2023.

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which we work and live, the Gathang-speaking people and pay our respects to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who now reside in the MidCoast Council area. We extend our respect to elders past and present, and to all future cultural-knowledge holders.
