Previous engagement

Phase one engagement

In 2017, Council started a conversation with the community regarding the use of the Tuncurry Pool, due to issues with the operation and safety of the facility.

Background on the issues related to the Tuncurry Pool were detailed in a report to Council. MidCoast Council Ordinary Meeting Agenda, 27 March 2019: Item 8 - Tuncurry Pool.

Faced with the inevitable closure of the existing pool in 2017, an extensive community consultation was undertaken.

The engagement explored the concept of replacing the pool with a children’s wet splash area. The results showed a very strong and clear endorsement of the idea, providing a facility that locals and visitors alike would enjoy, and not currently available in the Forster Tuncurry area.

Both the usage figures from the previous pool, and the strong response during the 2017 consultation, indicated that a children’s water playground was the preferred option for the site. As this has been clearly identified by our community, the decision to proceed with a water playground and not a swimming pool was made.

Phase two engagement

From December 2020 until January 2021 we asked the community to help us in the development of the design of the water playground. These ideas were gathered through an extensive engagement program, including online activities, pop-up sessions in Forster-Tuncurry, and focus groups.

As a part of the engagement we targeted those with a particular interest in the final design through the use of focus groups, We held these with families, schools, preschool and child care facilities, local businesses and people living with a disability, their carers and families.

Please read our Phase Two - Engagement Outcome Report for more information on what the community told us about the design of the water playground.
