What you told us

  • New paths and extensions

Build new walking and cycling paths as well as extend our existing pathways. It is important to prioritise new paths along busy roads where people are currently walking and cycling. This is a safety concern, especially for kids walking to school and parents with prams.

  • Safety and accessibility

Improve current pathways to make them safer and more accessible for all users including elderly, children and people living with a disability. This includes widening paths, adding lighting and ensuring surfaces are even and well-maintained.

  • Natural environment

Design paths that take advantage of the regions natural beauty including coastal walks, lakefront paths and trails through parks. Integrating paths in a way that minimizes environmental impact is also important.

  • Connectivity

Connect current pathways to each other and to towns, parks and points of interest. It is important that paths are well-connected without forcing users to cross busy roads to make it easier and safer to travel without cars.

  • Visitor attractions

Development of new paths will attract more visitors to the region and boost the local economy. Incorporate history signage along key walkways. Look at other Council areas and countries who have fantastic walking, cycling paths and trails for reference.

Some of the feedback received related to our Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan (PAMP) which focuses on how we connect communities to services and each other, which is not covered by this strategy.

The feedback we received in relation to PAMP outcomes will be included in the next PAMP review.
