How / when did the idea for Feathered come about?

In 2024 we received funding through the Art Gallery of NSW from TLE Electricals with the idea to share works from the Art Gallery of NSW (AGNSW) collection. Gallery staff brainstormed to come up with a theme for an exhibition we could create in-house. The subject of birds kept coming up, they are so significant in our lives and cultures throughout time. Also, the AGNSW had many artworks to lend that included birds. We have also invited 7 regional artists to contribute works which is a great opportunity for them to be shown in a major exhibition.

What’s the process for borrowing artworks from the AGNSW?

We began discussions with curators at AGNSW, noting that we would like to bring some high profile names to our Gallery; Whiteley, Boyd, Smart, just to name a few. Once we came up with our wish list, fellow curator, Ali Haigh and I visited AGNSW to view the works and discuss logistics with the Head Registrar, Emma. One thing people may not realise is that there are permissions to be sought from families or owners of artworks, before we can use them in any marketing. This is a very legal process and takes time!

What are you most excited about with this exhibition?

Ali and I are really excited to have secured an iconic Brett Whiteley Work, ‘The Pink Heron’ as a feature work in the exhibition.

Another featured artist is 2 x Archibald winner, Del Kathryn Barton, with her ethereal animated video, ‘The Nightingale and the Rose’. Del will also be attending the opening event on 26 September.

We are also really excited about the fact that this is the biggest exhibition we have organised at Manning Regional Art Gallery. It’s a huge job, but it’s so satisfying to see it all come together.

Who should take time out to view Feathered?

This exhibition will have something for everyone. Being in a regional area, we are mindful of the varied interests of our visitors and locals so we curate our shows to appeal to as many people as possible. Accompanying the exhibition are a diverse range of programs for children and adults alike, including art making, bird call workshops, language workshops and much more. We are also hoping to have some of the works interpreted into 3D renditions for those with sight impairment.
