Overview

The MidCoast Aboriginal Action Plan guides our efforts to improve outcomes for Aboriginal people on the MidCoast. While not all needs identified are Council’s responsibility to deliver, we will seek partnerships with other organisations and government agencies to deliver improvements.

The MidCoast region has over 94,000 residents with 6.2% identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, well above the NSW regional average of 4.7%. We value our diverse community and recognise the opportunity to embrace the local Aboriginal culture and enhance inclusiveness.

Exhibition period

The draft strategy was on public exhibition for community feedback from 13 January – 26 March 2023, where we received feedback from 79 people and 5 formal submissions.

The feedback received from the community was considered and some changes were made to the draft document.

The strategy was then adopted by the elected Council at the 23 August 2023 Ordinary Meeting.

Community feedback

The key themes emerging from the community feedback were:

  • improving the consultation process with Aboriginal peoples,
  • working with local Aboriginal groups,
  • the need for multi-purpose spaces
  • local and specific cultural awareness training
  • caring for our special sites
  • additional stakeholders who could support the plan’s objectives.

How did we get here?

The draft Aboriginal Action Plan was written considering community feedback gathered between February 2020 until June 2022.

A total of 214 people provided feedback on issues including housing, health, education, justice, connection and inclusion, family and culture.

You can read more about the what you told us during the first phase of engagement below.
